SEVERE EARTHQUAKE
WORLD-WIDE RECORDS. SiEAT BELIEVED TO BE IN MONGOLIA. PROLONGED. DISTURBANCE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, Dec. 25. Seismograph reports received here from various parts of the world indicate a heavy earthquake, probably in Asia. The West Bromwich observatory in England and the Central Institute of Meteorology at Vienna reported respectively an “extraordinarily severe” nnd “catastrophic” earthquake, approximately 4000 miles away. The Canadian Dominion observatory at Ottawa reported similarly, stating that the shake was of four hours’ duration and the centre was 6480 miles away. RECORDED IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Dec. 26. An earthquake of great severity was recorded at Sydney on Christmas Day at 12.18 p.m. There was a fresh disturbance eleven minutes later. It is believed the shake originated 6000 miles away. APPARATUS OUT OF ACTION. LONDON, Dec. 26. An earthquake lasting two hours was registered by British seismographs early on Christmas Day. The shake is lielieved to have originated in Mongolia, 3400 miles distant. The shake was so violent that it put some European apparatus out of action.
