PROMISE OF PROFIT. PARIS, Dec. 26. A distracted Liverpool priest, Father McAuley, on arrival at the station accompanied by a detective, told the police that ho had parted with cheques amounting to £SOOO to an American who, ho believed, was in Paris. The police ascertained that the man described had returned to New Y’ork. They detained a man who called at a certain address for letters addressed to the American.

The priest said that ho had met the American long ago while voyaging from the United States, and was induced to part with the money on a promise of profitable investment.
