MAYOR’S APPEAL FUND

CHRISTMAS ENTERTAINMENT. In the Regent Theatre on Christmas night a picture entertainment and) concert in aid of the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal Fund was successfully staged, and resulted in approximately £2O being secured,, which brought the total of the fund to‘£l66 18s 6d. Artists who contributed were Mr and Mrs Garde Grimsliaw, Mr B. Tennent, Misses Naomi Wkalley and Dorothy Southey Baker. Miss Stevens was at the piano. Tho Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), at a suitable opportunity, thanked Mr F. Jackson for arranging the performance, stating that he was but echoing the appreciation of all those who contributed to the fund. The past year had been a hard one, and the future was uncertain, nevertheless Christmas was a season of goodwill and never did the world need it more than it did to-day. Mr Mansford added that, thanks to the assistance and co-operation of all sections of the community, a considerable load had been taken off his shoulders. The lesson to be learnt from the present depression was the truth of the old saying, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” There need he no fear of the future if one had confidence in oneself and exhibited that courage common to Britons the world over —- courage in the face of adversity—with a display of kindness towards one’s fellow beings. Mr Mansford asked the audience to join with him in carrying a vote of thanks to Mr Jackson for arranging the performance, and to Palmerston North Theatres for the use of the theatre and to the artists and staff. The Mayor also disclosed that Mrs Jackson and lady members of the staffs of the various theatres in Palmerston North had purchased the ingredients and made 160 Christmas puddings, which had been distributed to those in unfortunate circumstances. It was a splendid performance and those ladies deserved a special vote of thanks.
