AUCKLAND CUP WINNER.
FAST PASSAGE'S CAREER.
FROM FRAILTY TO FAME.
The luck of rucing has seldom had a clearer illustration than is provided by the career of this year’s Auckland Cup winner, Fast Passage. M inner already this season of the \\ inter Cup and the New Zealand Cup at Riecarton, Fast Passage was very lame after her notable triumph on Monday and she may never race again. The trouble is in the suspensory ligament. ‘‘Fast Passage will not bo able to appear again at the meeting and I very much fear that she has run her last jace, said Mr A. Cutts, trainer for Sir Hilaries Clifford. “All along it was just touch-and-go. merely a toss of the coin, whether we would be' able to get her to the post iu the cup at all.’’ The fact that Fast Passage won brilliantly in record time for the race is a. striking tribute to the skill was exercised in turning her out as tit as hands could possibly make her. It also demonstrated once again her exceptiona. merit as a racehorse. Slid is the firstmare that has won the Auckland Lup since Karo scored in 1919. ONCE ORDERED TO BE SHOT. The present trouble is not the only one that Fast Passage has experienced. She developed lameness early last season and after running second to Korokio in tne New- Zealand Oaks she appeared to be a hopeless cripple. Sir diaries Clifford said he did not wish her to suffer any more pain and ordered that she should be shot. 3lr Cutts and Mr J. Stafford, veterinary surgeon, pleaded with him in order that a theory they hnd found might Ih> given a trial, and eventually Sir Charles agreed. As a start, Mr Stafford had the filly's blood tested. He found that it was abnormal, showing parasitic infection, and from previous experience and post mortems he realised that this infection was impeding the blood supply. Mr Stafford then commenced a course of treatment by injection, with satisfactory results. The filly made good progress and at Easter she started in tho Great Northern Oaks at Ellerslie, but the cure was not complete. while she sprung a curb, which neoessitatfd another rest. In Mav Fast Passage was ready for another trial, but as a preliminary her blood was tested agnin and found to be normal. After that she did everything right. She won at Ashburton and South Canterbury in Mav. twice at Dunedin in June, was twice second at Trentham in July, won the Winter Cup at Riecarton in August, scored a second and a first at Trentham in October, and won tho New Zealand Cup at Riecarton last month. RIDER'S MIXED LUCK.
Past Passage’s rider, A. E. Ellis, has likewise had more than his share ot mistortune. He was severely injured at the Grand National meeting last year, but recot ered and rode Supremacy to victory in the Railway Handiap at Ellerslie last December. Again at Riecarton in August he was very badly hurt when Snowfall fell in a steeplechase event and the Cup yesterday was only tho third race in which he had ridden in four months. Even now he is not able to raise his right hand high enough to assist in tying his tie. fast Passage is the tirsr Auckland Cup winner that Ellis lias ridden. He won the Great Northern Hurdles on Mister Gamp in 1929, the Grand National Hurdles on Per.urv Rose in 1925 and Wharncliffe in 1927, and the Grand National Steeplechase on Snowfall in 1951. He has also won the Winter Cup three times. Fast Passage was his only mount on Monday and the gross riding fee was £4O.
