TREACHEROUS SEA

FARMER DROWNED. CAUGHT BY CURRENT. Per Press Association. TE PUKE. Dec. 27. A farmer, Mr Edward Breach, aged 32, was drowned at Maketu Beach, nine miles from Te Puke. He was bathing near the mouth of tlys Kaikuna River, with others, when he got into difficulties. Mr Eric J. Lesner, of Te Puke, went to his assistance, but owing to the strong current was himself in difficulties and nad to receive help. Meanwhile Mr Breach disappeared. Willing helpers, numbering about 200, using boats, drag-nets, etc., searched for him, but without avail. Mr Breach, who lived in No. 1 Road, Te Puke was a married man with no family. He had only recently arrived in the district. A heavy easterly sea' caused difficulties all along the coast, and at Mount Maunganui several bathers had to receive help from the Te Puke life-saving team. BATHERS IN PERIL. DANGEROUS' UNDERTOW. AUCKLAND, Dec. 2G. The whole of the visiting team of English cinder-track riders, two local broadsiders, and a girl who was with the party, and several fishermen found themselves in difficulty in the surf at Pika, West Coast, about midday today,. The incident, which at one stage appeared serious, closed without any actual harm. The English riders were swimming in fairly smooth water when Mr B. Gregory got out of his depth, and was rapidly carried seawards by a particularlv strong undertow. He was resold by Mr E. Langton, world chfKnpion broadsider. Another man, Mr Stevenson, who attempted to save Mr Gregory, got into difficulties, and Mr J. Good swam out toward him. He also was caught by the undertow, and was rescued by a girl who was with the party. Other members of the party attempted to save Mr Stevenson, but met with difficulties. He was finallysaved by two fishermen with lines.
