PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET.
WELLINGTON v. OTAGO. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. The weather is overcast but warm for the resumption of the AVellington v. Otago cricket match, with prospects of a drying wicket to make the local players’ task more difficult. Massey (14) and James (0) faced Dunning and Badcock, the bowlers using the off. and leg theory respectively, Smith replacing Dunning after one maiden over and Badcock changing the field to the off. Four singles came in the first quarter of an hour. At 20, Duning relieved Smith. Badcock, who had every scoring avenue blocked, bowled a string of maidens and claimed Massey’s wicket in the tenth over through a snick to the slips. Dempster followed and scored the first run off the Otago skipper, swinging Dunning to the leg boundary. Dempster brought 30 up for 50 minutes and James collected a boundary off Badcock. Dempster survived a legbefore appeal when facing Dunning. At lunch the score was 41 for 3. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. TO-DAY’S PLAY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 28. There is fine weather with an easterly breeze for the final day of the Auckland v. Canterbury match. Canterbury, with a lead of eleven runs on the first strike, carried on their second innings. Kerr (5) and Talbot (33) faced the bowling of Vivian from the south end and Matheson from the north. The pitch was playing well. Canterbury’s main object was to make sure of a win on the first innings, and the batsmen opened sedately. Vivian sent down two maidens to Kerr. Both men turned Matheson to leg, the bowler retaliating by bringing three men close in on the on side, as well as at fine leg on the boundary. Talbot batted solidly, running into the forties with placement shots mostly to the on. Talbot had an easy life when Weir dropped a simple chance off Vivian, and the next ball was tipped through the slips in a dangerous manner. Had Auckland held all the chances offering Canterbury might have been in an unenviable position. ' Talbot opened out to Matheson, driving him high to the on for two and hooking him to the leg fence, bringing the hundred up after 100 minutes. Two more singles gave Talbot his fifty. Vivian was tossing them well up just outside the off pin and tempting the batsmen to hit out, but both men remembered their experience of the first innings and refused to be drawn. With the total at 121 Bush clean bowled Kerr. Talbot was then sixty. Page the newcomer, opened confidently but lifted Vivian to Bush at cover. —140—4—17. Talbot was aggressive and had / 0 at noon, with Cromb as partner.
