TURKISH REFORM

USE OF “ALLAH” DISPLACED

AFTER FIVE CENTURIES

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright.) Received December 29, 1.5 p.m. CONSTANTINOPLE, Dec. 28.

For the first time in five centuries the word ‘‘Allah” will not be heard when the the call to prayer is made in tlie city’s four hundred minarets to-morrow at the opening of the Fast of Ramadan. The Turkish' word “Tanri” will be substituted, while at every mosque the Koran will be chanted in Turkish instead of Arabic.

Tin’s change was ordained in order to place the faith on a national basis. It is much opposed hr the Moslem priests, but the most vehement of the opponents of the change have already been imprisoned.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Mohammedan year. In that month the Prophet is said to have received his first revelation. It is kept as a strict fast.
