NEW NAVAL DESIGNS.
The “world’s ugliest battleships,” now being built by Japan, are depleted in Jane’s Fighting Ships lor 1932. The Atago will have a very odd appearance, her lmge low tore funnel being sloped back in order to be kept clear ol the pagoda-like bridge work. the Soviet dreadnought .Marat is also of queer design, with the fore funnel raised and the upper section tilted aft, looking as if it had been broken. The Italians, concentrating on speed have produced cruisers that will reach 42.04 knots, exceeding the pace of Britain’s latest destroyers. The Italian flotilla leader Da Mosba attained 44 knots, compared with the 40 knots ol the British ship Codrington, of the same class.
Japan prefers to concentrate on heavier armaments, and her new 6in. gun cruisers will he far better gunned than their European equivalents. Britain’s cruisers of the Arethusa class, which are now removed from the •‘Hush-hush’’ list and will carry six 6in. guns and six torpedo tubes, have been designed as maitls-of-all-work and will bo capable of scouting for the battle fleet, guarding convoys and act-'*; as sentinels on Empire trade routes.
