The death occurred in AVellington on Monday evening of Mrs Agnes Whitaker, relict of Mr B. E. AVhitakcr, formerly a well-known AVellington bookseller, and mother of Miss A. Whitaker, of Pahiatua. The engagement is announced between Edna Florence, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. AY. Ridley, 40 Chelwooil Street, Palmerston North, to Norman Sutton Barton, youngest son of Mrs A. M. and the late J. H. AVright, of Auckland, formerly of Hamilton.

The National Diploma in Dairying has lieen obtained by Miss Nona. Ellis, of Parktown, South Africa. This diploma is granted after a high-grade ex. animation, held under the combined auspices of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, and the British Dairy Farmers’ Association, and has world-wide recognition. The standard set is so high that out of the 06 students who sat tor the examination. from ail England only 24 passed.

011 tho recommendation of the central committee, which had conducted a full inquiry, the AVairarapa Hospital Board decided last week to dismiss immediately two senior nurses who were absent from the hospital without leave after 11 p.m., and to reprimand a junior nurse who was with them. The board also decided to advise the solicitors for a fourth nurse who had been concerned iti the matter, but had resigned voluntarily, that it could not accede to a request for a testimonial for her. The committee stated in its report that it viewed the ma.tter seriously, as the action of these nurses was prejudicial to the discipline of the institution. Tho committee also reported that at its last meeting it had agreed that “glass frames bo placed over tho bolts in the lire doors at the Nurses’ Home, Masterton.”

Air and Mrs R. G. Beard, who have been visiting Mr and All's J. D. AA r ilson, Pahiatua, have returned to Kimholton. Mr and Airs Jas. AVallace and Alisses Wallace, of Palmerston North, are spending the holidays at Plimmerton.

ROASTS. To Boast a Fowl. —Truss and stuff with seasoning, put in a baking dish some good dripping, a little water; lay the fowl ill first on its back till warmed through, then turn on its breast. Cook that way till just at the last few minutes, then turn, with the breast up to brown. (All poultry should be baked this way; it keeps it from getting dry). Cover with greased paper while cooking. It will take three-quarters to one and aquarter hours. Serve with rolls of bacon and good brown gravy, the gizzard and liver placed under the wings. To Boast a Turkey.—Truss and stuff the breast with same seasoning as for roast fowl, sprinkle salt over turkey, cover with oiled paper, put in a baking dish with a good deal of dripping, two or three tablespoonfuls water, and placing the bird on its back first, then turn on its breast, bake in a good, brisk oven for two and a-lialf hours to three hours, according to size. Serve with ricli brown gravy, and bread sauce, rolls of bacon; send to table ham or boiled pork with it.
