NERVE-WRACKING.

LOCKED UP YYITH BEARS. “The most nerve-wracking ordeal T have ever experienced,” said the noted animal-trainer, Janesco, on emerging from a cage in which he had been confined in the dark for a quarter of an hour with six Polar bears. Jancsco was performing with a circus in a Nottingham music hall when tlie city’s electricity supply failed and the theatre was plunged into gloom. Janesco had been attacked tbe previous night b.v one of the bears, and saw in the dim light tho same animal approaching, followed by' others. He kept them at bay with his whip, circling the cage several times as two bears leaning against the door prevented his getting out. “Polar bears are ferocious and untrustworthy,” he said. “1 felt them rubbing against me in the darkness, and one scratched my trouser-leg. I knew that if it drew blood, the others would instantly rend me. I could just see their green eyes and white fur, but the bears are able to sec in tho dark. It was the longest quarter of an hour I’ve known.”
