MANAWATU RACES
FINAL DAY AT AWAPUNI
PAGANELLI WINS LIVERPOOL HANDICAP
The third and final day of the Manawatu Racing Club s summer meeting was held at Awapuni, to-day, in glorious weather. With the inviting conditions, there was a very fair crowd of patrons, a lai'ge percentage of whom were ladies, and the lawns presented a pleasing scene. While the strength of the fields had been reduced as a result of the heavy strain of the racing, the reponse from, owners for the final day was very satisfactory and another interesting day was provided for patrons.
Following are the detailed results of the events decided up to the time of the first edition of the “Standard” going to press:—
THE OPENING EVENT,
FAVOURITE SUCCESSFUL. BRAMBLETORN BEATS HOLLY HOLM There was very even betting for the first .four horses in the Tiritca Highweiglit Handicap. the opening event, Bramblotorn (£232) being actually favourite from Holly Holm (£219) and Tenaere (£212). The latter was sent to the outside at the barrier, and in the jump-off squeezed out Easterly, while Holly Holm was also slow to begin. The pace, however, was very flow over the early stages. Holly Holm find Lancet showing the way to Invictus, Tranquillity, Bramblotorn and Tenacic going through the straight. Easterly recovered her lost ground and. was in fourth position as the field went ’nto the back, with Bramblotorn and Tenaere next. Going along the back Holly Holm and Lancet were still together ahead of Invictus and Okonua, the latter having made a forward move at the five furlong post. A furlong later Brambltorn went to the front and turned into tho straight two to three lengths clear cf Holly Holm and Okopua, with Lancet, Easterly and Tenaere next. In the run home the leader held his position to win nicely by two lengths from Holly Holm, with Tenaere half a length back. Okopua wa3 fourth.
AWArUNI HORSE'S SUCCESS.
BEACONSFIKLD SCORES AGAIN. White Squall was withdrawn from the Apprentices’ Handicap, allowing Golden Horn to represent- the Koinball .stable, this being tho only defection. Tahoma (£305) was a firm favourite from Late Jest (£231) and Wasteland (£192). There was also good support for Beaconsficld. Tho field got away in good line. Beaconsficld and 31 ercian Prince forging to the front, and this pair led Chief Savage, Wasteland, Late Jest and Tahoma on to the course proper. Wasteland ran up to attend Beaconsfield as they approached the three furlong post, and was actually in front as they straightened up, Morrath and Mercian Prince being together ahead of Chief Sa.vage and Tahoma. In the run to the pest Beaconsficld went to the front and, although he finished a shade wide, ho had a two lengths’ advantage over Wasteland at the post. Morrath was half a length back third and the favourite fourth. ANOTHER FAVOURITE SCORES. POROTITI TAKES JUVENILE. Porotiti (£539) was preferred to tho topweight Arena (£433) for the Juvenile Handicap, and the favourite duly carried hi? backers through, but tho second elect was beaten into fourth place. After some delay at the barrier, tho field went away in'good order, Lady Nan and Meritor showing out from Silent Flight, I’orotiti and Quietly. At the half mile post Bettwsycoed nearly came down and dropped well back, Meritor and Silent Flight having charge os they came across the top, from Porotiti, Arena and Royal Jest. They turned into tho straight in practically "the same order, and when heads were straightened out, Porititi ran up to the leader. Over the final pinch Porotiti drew clear to win by one and a. half lengths from Lady Nan with Silent Flight half a length back. Arena was fourth and Colossian next.
RIDER SUSPENDED. \V. Sliand, the rider of Rust in the Juvenile Handicap, was suspended for ten days for interference wth Bettwsycoed. PAGAXELLI’S GOOD FINISH. ANNEXES CHIEF EVENT.
Gay Court was withdrawn from the Loverpool Handicap, leaving ten runners to face the starter. Paganeni (£435) was installed a firm favourite from Richfield (£2*B) with Cluny (£244) next in the order of betting. From a walk-up start Paganelli was smartest to begin from La Poupee, and the pair led Eminent, Ruanui and Arrow Lad away from home. They raced in practically the same order along the back and across the top, where the favourite was holding a two lengths break
on La Poupee and Eminent, with Arrow Lad, Cluny, Kuanui and Richfield bunched. Once in the straight Eminent and La Poupee went up in pursuit of Paganelli, but t lie favourite held them off to win nicely
by three-quarters of a length from Eminent. with T.a Poupee half a length back third. Richfield, who was indifferently placer! early, filled fourth place, with Arrow Lad next. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
