MANAWATU TOURNAMENT. SECOND DAY’S PLAY. Steady progress was made in the various divisions at the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s tournament, which was continued at the Linton Street courts yesterday afternoon, and most of the sections were well advanced at the conclusion of the day’s play. Thero were some excellent matches.

Dr. K. G. Salmond (Feilding) defeated Pearce, a well-known Wellington player, in two straight sets in the championship singles. Pearce was troubled by his opponent’s quick chopping shots. It was anticipated that a hard match would eventuate between N. G. Brown, the improved Palmerston North player, and R. A. Court, of Hawke’s Bay. This expectation was realised and there were brilliant patches of play, with splendid placings by both. Court won the first set. but Brown led 5—2 at one stage in the second. Then Court, with superior courtcra.ft, gradually wore bis opponent down to win B—6.8 —6.

There was an excellent game in the ladies’ singles between Miss Glenny. the young Hawke’s Bay player, and Miss Shand. It was characterised by long rallies. Miss Glenny prevailed over her opponent. In a match with many brillia.nt and exciting moments, C. E. Malfroy defeated E. D. Andrews, 2—6, 6 —2, 10 —8, 6 —2, at Miramar to-day, thus winning the men’s championship singles in the Wellington Tennis Association’s annual tournament. The final of the women’s singles was won by Mrs Dykes, 4—6, 10 —8, 6 —4, after a splendid match with Miss Nichols. Dr. Smyth, one-time doubles champion of New Zealand, regained tlxe singles title of Marlborough from Coull. The match was most stubbornly fought, the final providing the best play seen in the local tournament for years. The principal features were Coull’s sensational assumption of his best form after playing below par for most ,of the, season, and Smyth’s determined uphill' fight in the deciding set. ' j
