CHESS.
CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 30. The fifth round of the chess congress commenced this morning. At the lunch adjournment one game had been concluded—between Miller and Severne. It resulted in a legitimate draw making Severne’s fifth draw. He’meets Goldstein to-night. Goldstein and Jones played a queen’s pawn game conducted on unusual lines. Goldstein commenced with a strong king side attack, and at the adjournment the game was at a critical state. In the Trakanthorp v. Hicks match the French defence was used. The Australian adopted the Nimzovitch at. tack and obtained some advantage in position. Hicks defended carefully and at the adjournment no immediate result was foreseen. In the Scott v. Kalling game, a queen’s pawn, the game was equal. In the Faulkinor v. Beyer match, with a Cambridge springs defence, with careful play a draw seems inevitable. In the Maddox v. Erskine match, a queen’s pawn game, they have equal chances.
