JOCKEY INJURED. EASTM’OOD SUFFERS BROKEN TOE. AUCKLAND, Dec. 29. Phenomenal success attended the riding efforts of the lightweight jockey, A. 11. Eastwood, at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton last month, but bis luck lias deserted him at the Auckland Cup meeting at Ellerslie. and it is doubtful whether 110 will ride again at the meeting. He was out of action and getting about with the aid of crutches yesterday as the result of the foot injury he received when his mount, Berate, was forced on the rails in the first race on Monday. In spile of the painful nature of his injury, which is stated to he a broken toe, Eastwood continued to ride on Monday, but lie was unable to place his foot on the ground after being beaten on Silver Scorn in the last race. As there were Tl.O conveyances available to take him off the course at the moment, Mr C. Murray Avnsley, the Ricclnrton owner-trainer, solved the problem by giving him a pick-a-back.
PILLOW EIGHT. NOMINATION FOR AGTJA CALIENT! POSSIBILITIES OF TRIP. AUCKLAND. Dec. 28.
The nomination of the three-year-old racehorse. Pillow Fight, for the Agua Calienie Handicap, to he run in Mexico in March, has been made primarily as a safeguard. The owner. Mr I). J. Davis, whose colours were carried to victory in the race last March by the great Phar Lap. fully intends to scud him provided that he makes (satisfactory progress. Just at present there is a doubt whether he is quite himself. but in order that there should he no regrets in ease he develops his true form a definite entry has been forwarded. “It is better to he sure than sorry.” Mr Daviis said. “I know Pillow Fight is not hv any means a Phar Lap. but lie is decidedly useful and it. is only natural that he should improve if he goes to America. He should heat more than will heat him. I would have liked to see him win the King’s Plate at Ellerslie to-dav. but I am quite satisfied with his performance in running second to La Mndorne. It is just a question whether he i« quite himself at the moment, so that under the eircumstanreis lie did very well.” Mr Davis said he felt convinced that the trip made by Phar Lap and one likely to he made by Pillow Fight would prove to be simply forerunners of many such vis|s to America by New Zealand racehorses. M’illi the improvement of ocean services and tlie consequent reduction in the time for the journey America would become just as great a magnet for the Dominion’s best horses ns Australia was. At present be looked upon Phar Fan’s expedition ns merely a pioneering venlure for many to follow in future.
It is no! surnrising that after his great success with Phar Leo Mr Davis has the highest regard for New Zealand bloodstock. So firmly dee= || P believe in its fluidity that be is making a mest interesting experiment in breeding. Tl e Ins purchased three brood mares and will breed from litem to American time with the object of sending their prngenv to America to rare. One of the brood mares is Englet. winner of the New Zealand Oaks and manv other races, who is to he mated with Night Paid, sire of Phar Lap and Pillow Fight. The other two he bought from Dr Ms (’. Ring, of Auckland, and they will he mated with Chief Ruler, sire of manv notable winners. Further purchases are likely. Pillow Fight is being trained by C. Morse, of Takanini, and it is possible that he may accompany him to America.
