THE ANGLING SEASON.
OPENING DAY ACTIVITIES. Followers of Izaak Wlton were early afield yesterday morning when the opening of the fishing season was launched. Apparently no limit baskets were taken in the Manawatu district, but fishermen enjoyed a good day, although the rivers were carrying too much water to make conditions ideal. In addition the strong wind handicapped the fly anglers to a certain extent. Those who whipped the Oroua River were subjected to disappointment, but those who traversed the Manawatu were more fortunate and the majority of the fish were caught in this river. So far as could be ascertained, no rainbow were taken, but some good trout were placed on the scale. In conenction with the senior and junior competitions conducted by the Palmerston North Anglers’ Club, the weigh-in disclosed that 19 members had participated and that 90 fish, weighing in the aggregate over lewt, had been taken. Details of the day’s catch where the club members were concerned are: Senior. —J. Thorburn, 11 fish, total weight 181 b 7oz; S. J. Bust, 10 fish, 191 b; A. M. Dale, 8 fish, 81b 2oz; C. H.
