GOLF IN BRITAIN.

PLAYERS DISQUALIFIED. An unprecedented incident led to the disqualification of A. Mitchell and A. J. Lacey, who were playing together in the qualifying stages of the £IO4O professional tournament at Pinner Hill (Middlesex). Lacey for the first few holes outdrove Mitchell. His caddie examined the shorter ball at the sixth and walked to the longer ball. Mitchell played the shorter ball, and when he holed out ho found it was the wrong ball. He was, therefore, automatically disqualified. Lacey had only played one shot with the wrong ball. He might have gone back and dropped another, but he similarly disqualified himself by holing out. The officials requested the players to continue, leaving the matter for later decision, but both players gave up, feeling flint t.bev must: nnid >v t. < consequences of an innocent breach of Rule 8. Rule 8, Clause 2, of the special rules for stroke competition says: “If a competitor play a stroke with a ball other than his own he shall incur no penalty provided he then play his own ball; but if he play two consecutive strokes with a wrong ball he shall be disqualified.”
