CRIME IN INDIA.
TERRORIST ACTIVITY. Suggestions in India that a hostage system be adopted coincide with the belated announcement that the Bengal Government is to take measures to curb terrorist activity in Midnapore. Letters in the European Press demand the hostage svstem. It is suggested that hostages be named from among revolutionaries known to the police. It is felt that if it became known that the Government meant business, assassinations would cease. As a result of the murder of Mr Burge, Resident Magistrate at Midnapore, the armed police force is to be increased, and the imposition of a curfew and identity cards may be ordered to maintain order.
