THE CRICKET SEASON.

MID WEEK PLAYERS. The annual report of the Optimists’ Cricket Club, which participates in the mid-week competitions conducted by the Manawatu Cricket Association, reads:—“lt affords great pleasure to announce that our club has once again been successful in winning the T. R. Moore Cup. Although only in existence two years, we have won the cup on both occasions. We cannot speak too highly of our members lor the way they play the game and for their loyal financial support. In the matter of furnishing material, the club is greatly indebted to the other clubs, especially P.D.C. and Combined Services Clubs. In the past two years these clubs have helped us materially, and we wish to thank all teams for their support, which we hope will continue for the present season. The season was an exceptionally long one, the team having played 22 games (compared with 13 for the 1931-32 season). We won 13 games, lost 6, drew 3 and had six 4-point wins. It was the latter that gave us the honours, for the teanis were so close that there was a difference of only If points between first and second. Strange to say, although winning the cup twice, we have not any member with a century to his credit. The best batting average of the season gpes to C. Edlin, who, unfortunately, will not be with us this season. Batting 'averages are: —Edlin, 463 runs, average 33.07; Evans, 459 runs, average 30.6 ; Rice, 356 runs, average 22.2; Miller. 207 runs, average 20.7. P. Rice leads the bowling averages with remarkable figures, although the long season helped him to attain his 100 wickets. Bowling figures are: Rice, 101 wickets for 812 runs, average 8.03; Hicken, 10 wickets, average 13; McGregor, 59 wickets, average 13.4; Evans, 18 wickets, average 13.4. “In conclusion, we wish to thank the Manawatu Cricket Association for all it has done for us in the past, and we also wish to thank Mr R. Brace, secretary of the association, for the way in which, he has always proved willing to help us in any way.”
