DANTE'S MARVELS. MODERN MAGIC AT THE OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. Truly it may be said that modern magic holds no secrets from Dante, the famous Dane who commences his. Palmerston North season of two nights at the Opera House to-night. His mind is a mill for miracles, and for nearly three hours lie keeps his audience bewildered by the rapidity of his amazing feats. His performance opens with what •is described as “15 surprises in 15 . seconds." Live, ducks, geese, gcats and even a little sucking pig arc produced from unexpected places, and live pigeons arc caught in a hand lict after having “materialised” in space. Then follows in rapid succession oven greater mysteries. From a “rag, a bone, and a hank of hair" Dante creates a beautiful girl.- Ho defies the laws of gravitation by causing articles to float in space; he illustrates a seeming paradox—that a man can bo in two places at the one time—and then lie produces glass after glass of sparkling alo from an empty barrel. The ale >ho distributes among his patrons, also excellent wines. Ho calmly “saws” a beauti ful young lady in halves, after placing her in a lovely cabinet, which barely takes her form, and rests only on a plank two and a half inches through. After the lady has been “sawn’* in halves, the halves arc drawn apart, and Dante steps between them; the “victim” can bo seen moving both hands and feet which protrudo from the divided cabinet. Over 51/ mysteries are presented during the evening s performance, concluding with a magnificent Chinese water spectacle, a bewildering novelty, which entails the use of many hundreds of gallons of -water. Intending patrons arc reminded that the box plans are rapidly filling at the Central Booking Office where seats may bo reserved for the two nights. Popular prices arc charged, and children will bo admitted to all parts, and at each performance at half price. PICTURE THEATRES. “Sweepings” at the Regent Theatre; “The Love Contract” at the Palace Theatre; “Smoke Lightning” at the Ivosy Theatre.
