ROMAN BURIAL GROUND
DISCOVERY AT COLCHESTER. Excavations which were resumed at Colchester (England) a short time ago near the pre-Roman city of Camulodunum have resulted in the finding of a burial group of about 1800 years ago, with manv well-preserved articles of jewellery and pottery. The group consists of a large globular amphora, or Roman wine jar, and its contents, and a solitary jug with handle in- red ware. The amphora contained. in addition t-o a cenerary urn and bones, a glass bottle for ointment, two barrel-shaped cups in castor ware, a small lamp in red ware, a square mirror in speculum meta.l, a bronze brooch in the form of a duck, another brooch of unusual design with bone knobs, a bone ring nnd a bronze ring, and a quantity of beads. The group, which is believed to be that of a Roman lady, was found on the crest of a hill near the place where a Roman lead coffin of the fourth century was found some time ago.
