DOMINION’S DEFENCES.
GOVERNMENT CONSIDERATION. AVELLINGTON, Oct. 4. An important statement of the Government's proposals for strengthening the defence forces of the Dominion is expected to be made within the next few days. It is understood that Cabinet has lately given further consideration to the matter, although in the absence of the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. AV. Forbes, no final decision has been reached.
AVliatever plans the Government may have have been kept a close secret, and statements which have been made regarding the scope and extent of the defence reorganisation cannot be confirmed officially. It is believed, however, that the Government does not contemplate going so far as to restore compulsory military training.
