LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. MANAWATU CLUB’S FIXTURE. . With several former New Zealand champions competing, as well as the brilliant Miss Oliver Kay, of Dunedin, among a record field of 112' entries, the Manawatu Ladies’ Golf Club’s open championship tournament began under auspicious circumstances at the Hokowhitu links this morning. Offering a full medal course for ladies, the links were in exceptional order, both greens and fairways playing perfectly. The weather was dull and showery, while a tricky wind proved troublesome to players on the homeward journey, and precluded the possibility of records being' shattered. The feature of this morning’s play was weak putting, all the leading players failing in this department. Their lapses on the green were to some extent, however, attributable to the disconcerting tricks of an unhelpful wind. The standard of play from the tees generally was high, and there was little fault to find with the long game, there being magnificent driving in some cases. Though the scores were not outstanding, the field is a strong one, a very interesting fact in view of the application which, it is understood, is to be lodged to have the Hokowhitu course made the venue for the next New Zealand ladies’ championships. This morning the first qualifying round was played of the Manawatu open championship, which is held by Miss B. Gaisford. The second round was being played this afternoon, when an improvement was expected in the standard of play. Medal handicaps are being played in conjunction with each round. After those who qualify for the championship, the players with the next 16 best gross scores are to play-off on handicap for the Ekstedt Cup, at present held by Miss M. Garner. Owing to the size of the field, a special Consolidation Handicap has been arranged for the third group of scores. The championship final, together with the finish of the other divisions, will be reached on Friday afternoon. The duties of hon. secretary are being discharged by Mrs L. Seifert with her customary popularity‘and efficiency, while Mr J. R. Galloway is acting as starter.
Prominent players competing are Miss Oliver Kay, who recently won the Australian ladies’ open championship in brilliant fashion, Miss B, Gaisford, winner of the Wanganui championship and a member of the Tasman Cup team, Mrs D. Stout, of Heretaunga, a former New Zealand champion and the winner of the Wellington ladies’ provincial title, and Mrs H. C. Collinson, another former New Zealand champion who can always be depended upon to offer formidable opposition to any player. Though she was in the bunkers once or twice, Miss Gaisford settled down quickly to return the best gross score of the morning, when she handed in a card for one round. She lipped the hole at the 17th for three and then took three putts, or she lvould have broken 80. Under the conditions hers was a very fine performance. She began nicely, but took six at the second, and then recovered to go out in 41. She finished up over the last eight holes, showing splendid form. "Her card read as follows:—Out: 4 6 545463 4 41. In: 5 5 3 5 4 4 5 4 5-40. Total
81. Finding five bunkers in the first five holes, Miss Kay took 85 for her round, hut is expected to improve as she settles down to the course. She was in trouble at Strang’s, and at Eden pushed one shot out. However, she was on the green for two and then took two putts. At Land’s End she pulled her second into a pipe trap and had to lift out. She required three putts each at the 13th and 16tli. Her card read as follows:—Out: 55556545 4—44. In: 4 5 4 6 3 5 6 4 4—41. Total, 85. Her figures included an exceptionally nice three at the 14th (bogey four), where she played pretty golf. Partnering Miss Kay, Mrs Stout went out in 40, four strokes better, and was going well to the turn, though at River Side she drove into the bunker and took two to get out, the hole costing her seven. Slie slipped on the homeward journey, however, taking three putts at practically every green. Her card read as follows: —Out -.445364743 —4O. In: 55555655 6—47. Tot£tl
87. Putting failures accounted for Mrs H. C. Collinson returning a card of 87 after going out in 41. She made bogey figures to the sth, and then lapsed. Both she and her partner pushed their shots through at Eden, overran on the return, and took five. Mrs Collinson was in trouble from the 13th to the 16th. Her card read: Out: 44 5 35654 5—41. In: 46366664 5—46. Total 87. Miss I. Seifert (Feilding) went round in 91 to give her a net 78. She went out in 42 after being in the bunker at Eden, which cost her five strokes.
