MOVING A TRAIN.

DONNELLY’S CROSSING LINE. TRANSFER OENROLLING 'STOCK. More than ordinary interest attaches to the transfer of rolling stock for the Dargaville-Donnelly’s Crossing railway. A shart section of line was first laid from Tangowahine railway station to the river bank where the vehicles were loaded into barges, on which rails had been laid. The engine, travelling under its own steam was, with the van, the first to make the trip (says an exchange). On arriving at Dargaville after passing under the Northern Wairoa traffic bridge, the vehicles had to be hauled ashore and swung round again on the rails running parallel with the river. This was accomplished with the aid of the class “F” engine, depicted in the photograph below, and the engine at present in use on the section. The carriages, which are each 13 tons in weight and 45 feet long, were difficult to handle. One was placed on the rails on Saturday afternoon, and the other lay on the barge at the railway wharf until Monday. As the vehicles could only be removed from tlie barges at full tide, the gangs had some long hours of arduous labour. They worked under the direction of Mr Fred Boucher, assistant car and wagon inspector, Auckland.
