GOLF SURPRISES
MANAWATU LADIES’ TOURNEY. FIRST ROUND MATCHES. There was a suqjrise feature in the Manawatu ladies’ open golf tournament when it was continued on the Hokowhitu links this morning. Mrs H. C. Collinson, a former New Zealand champion, who is always a formidable player on her home course, went under in the first round of the championship to Miss I. Seifert, of Feildmg. The latter, who played consistently sound golf yesterday, quite definitely accounted for her opponent after being 2 down at the Bth. It was a remarkable performance for a young player who hit her first ball only nineteen months ago. Other match play in the championship resulted as expected, though Mrs D. Stout had a hard fight to head off Miss Barton from the same club at Heretaunga. The course was in first-class order, hut a strong cross wind proved unsettling to many players. Results of this morning’s play are as follow:

Airs Rota met Airs Jennings, a Alelbourne visitor who is temporarily residing at Takaka, Nelson, and eventually the former finished 2 up. Airs Rota lost the first hole 6-4, halved the next, won the 3rd and 4th, halved the sth, but lost Cliff View, where she was in serious trouble, taking 10. Airs Rota turned for home 1 up. They halved the next two and then Airs Jennings squared the game at Lagoon Hill. The 13tli and 14th were halved. The Hawera player won the loth, and they halved the next two, but Airs Rota took the last.
Defeating Mrs Ferguson 7 up and 6 to play, Miss Hanson had a comfortable win. She took the first two holes and halved the next two and went on to lead 4 np at the turn for home. She won the next three in a row and went on to win and complete the round in 87.
Miss Guy was out in 40 to defeat Mrs Blain, and led snp at the turn. She made bogey figures to Strang’s, where she landed in the middle bunker and took seven. She was through the green at Eden, but holed for four. She missed a short putt at the lltli, but secured a birdie at Land’s End. Both had threes at Lagoon Hill. Miss Guy missed a putt for a win at Ti Ti’s, and was short with her approach at the 14tli, but won the hole to end the match and, going on, recorded a birdie at the 15th.
Going out in 40 and doing a round of 88, Miss Wilson led Miss Ormond 2 up at the turn and went on to take the lltli and 16th, the other holes being halved. Mrs Stout just managed to account for Miss Barton, who did a round equivalent to 86. It was an even struggle all the way. A MAGNIFICENT SHOT.
Starting with two nice fours, Mrs Collinson looked likely to account for Miss Seifert, but the latter got a beautiful three at the second. However, Miss Seifert was two down at the eighth, but made a splendid recovery, taking three holes in succession to come all square at Lagoon Hill. At the preceding hole, Land’s End, which was halved in five, Mrs Collinson played a great short from the long grass under a tree, placing the ball on to the green magnificently. They halved at Ti Ti’s in six and Miss Seifert won the next two to lead 2 up. She took a seven at the 16th, where she got into a bunker, Mrs Collinson winning the hole with a nice five and narrowly missing a four. Each was on the 17th green with her second, but Mrs Collinson’s putt kicked up and Miss Seifert ended the match there. Mrs Collinson, whose mashie shots were letting her down, picked up several times on the homeward journey. Playing Mrs Elcstedt. wlio appeared uneasy at the start, Miss Hay ended the game at the 12th, where she was 7 up and 6 to play, but they carried on to the fairway of the 15th. Miss Kay was in good form and soon settled down to go out nicely in 38, Mrs Ekstedt meanwhile experiencing trouble. Scoring a neat birdie at the third, Miss Kay soon went on to establish a big lead, despite being bunkered at the short eight and ninth, where she took four. Bight on the green for two, she holed out for a pretty three at the 10th, but at the 11th sliced her second and had to chip out. 'She made amends with a splendid two at Land’s End, where the match finished. Carrying on to the 13th, however, Miss Kay got into the trees took three strokes to get out, and recorded an eight. ' Miss Gaisford accounted for Mrs Field sup and 4to play. The former took the first hole in bogey figures and the next was halved for six, both failing on the green. Both were down in three at Willows. Mrs Field was short with her approach at Cliff View, and Miss Gaisford, who was over to the left, chipped in beautifully to win the hole. Taking four at the 9th after three putts, Miss Gaisford commenced the home journey 1 up. The long holes found out Mrs Field s weakness, and the game ended at the 14th. The putting of both players was indifferent.
