GOLF TOURNEY

LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURE SECOND ROUND MATCHES. The second round of the open championship and the two handicap competitions were played at the Hokowhitu links when the Manawatu Ladies’ Golf Club tournament was continued yesterday afternoon. There were no surprises, but Miss Wilson, a. voung Bulls player, gave Miss B. Gaisford a stern struggle before the latter prevailed on the homeward journey. The course was in excellent order, but the wind was still strong and troublesome. Additional results are as follow: CHAMPIONSHIP. (Second Round.) Miss Oliver Kay (Dunedin) beat Mrs Rota (Hawera), 6 up and 4 to play. Miss M. Guy (Manawatu) beat Miss E. Hanson (Miramar), 1 up. Mrs D. Stout (Heretaunga) heat Miss I. Seifert (Feilding), 5 up and 4 to play. Miss B. Gaisford (Marton) heat Miss 0. Wilson (Bulls), 2 up and 1 to play. EKSTEDT CUP HANDICAP. (Second Round.) Miss J. Brinton Smith 13 beat Miss Jepson 8, 4 up and 3 to play. Mrs Jarvis 10 beat Mrs Dorrington 9, 3 up and 2 to play. Mrs Broderick 8 beat Miss E. Bell 7, 4 up and 3 to play. Mrs G. Van Asch 14 beat Mrs D. Williams 14, 5 up and 3 to play. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. (Second Round.) Mrs J. Graham 13 beat Mrs A. C. Feast 9, 1 up. Miss Wanklyn 13 beat Miss N. Grace 8,2 up and Ito play. Mrs Gabriel 15 beat Miss R. Rutledge 19, 1 up at the 21st. Mrs Keaney 15 beat Mrs H. McDowell 14, 3 up. COMMENT ON PLAY. Leading 2 up at the turn for home, Miss Wilson gave Miss Gaisford some anxious moments in their match before the latter ultimately asserted herself and wore her opponent down. The match was followed with interest by quite a gallery. Both recorded fives to the fourth, at which Miss Wilson won the hole 'with a pretty three, Miss Gaisford being through the green to take four. Strang’s was halved in six. Miss Gaisford was on in two at the sixth and Miss Wilson conceded the hole. The next was halved. Miss Gaisford drove into the bunker at the eighth, took three to get out and picked up. She was in the bunker again at the ninth and Miss Wilson won the hole in three to turn for home 2 up The Bulls player got into the long grass and duffed her second at the 10th. Her opponent was on the green in two at Land’s End, where Miss Wilson conceded the hole and they came all square. Lagoon Hill was halved in fours. Miss Gaisford was nearly on in two at Ti Ti’s, where Miss Wilson drove into the long grass and picked up. The Tasman Cup player missed three 811014; putts at the 14th, which was halved in five. Miss Gaisford was through in two at the 15th and won the hole with a five. They halved the 16th, and then the 17th, where Miss Gaisford had a remarkable drive of nearly 300 yards, sending her tee shot nearly to the green. Meeting Mrs Rota, Miss Oliver Kay, the Australian ladies’ open championship winner, finished the game at the 14th. She was putting well, but sliced sonie of her shots. Miss Kay. visited the bunker at the first. Mrs Rota missed her third and then a 6ft. putt, the hole being halved. Both cleared the bunker with their drives at the second, and Mrs Rota won the bole. The third was halved in five. Both had threes at the fourth, where Mrs Rota was in the bunker. Mrs llota missed her putt at the fifth and then took three on the green. They halved Strang’s in seven, tlieir putting being weak. They halved the eighth in fours. At the 9th Miss Kay got into the trees, but put her next on to the pin and holed in three to lead 2 up at the turn. Mrs Rota missed her putt at the 10th and at the 11th lier approach was over the bank. She failed to pitch up and conceded the hole, Miss Kay being right on the pin for three. They halved the 12th in fives and the 13th in sixes, and Miss Kay won Kraal with a neat three to take the match. A KEEN MATCH. Miss Guy had a hard struggle before she won from Miss Hanson on the last green. Both were bunkered at the first, which was halved in six. The second was halved in five and Miss Guy won the third. The latter had a bogey four at the next, where Miss Hanson was behind the bunker to the left. She tried to chip out, struck the top and then took two putts. After missing a putt, Miss Guy won the fifth, where Miss Hanson was in a hunker, but had a perfect bogey five at the next. They halved the seventh in five. Miss Hanson won the eighth with a nice three, her opponent taking five in the long grass. Miss Guy won Eden and they turned for home all square. Both were in the trees to the right with their mashie shots at the 10th, which Miss Guy won. They halved Laud’s End, but Mias Hanson sprang a birdie two at Lagoon Hill. Miss Guy won the next two holes. Miss Hanson had a bogey 5 at the 15th, where Miss Guy missed a putt. Miss Hanson sank a long putt for a birdie four at the 16th and each recorded a five at the 17tli, but Miss Guy won the match at the last hole, where Miss Hanson was in the grass bunker with lier second. Mrs Stout, playing very steadily, had no difficulty in accounting for Miss Seifert, a young player who was feeling the strain of a heavy morning round. FOUR-BALL BOGEY. The best card of 1 up in the fourball bogey competition played in the afternoon was returned by Mrs A. E. Ekstedt and Miss Barton. Misses A. Ormond and Dalgleish (Napier) and Mrs C. G. Moore and Miss N. Nash finished all square, but a count back gave the second prize to the former pair.
