TARIFF REQUESTS.

EVIDENCE FOR COMMISSION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 6. Evidence regarding printers’ materials was given before the Tariff Commission at Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin, and further evidence was given here to-day by Mr William Soper, of Wicks, Ltd. Mr Soper asked that there he no increase in the duty on raw materials and no reductions in the duty on finished printed products imported. Mr B. E. H. Whitcombe, managing director of Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., asked that no alterations be made in the tariff either by an increase in duties on raw materials or by reduced duties on imported printing materials. Mr Thomas Henry Phipps asked that British bottles be admitted free and that a duty of 50 per cent, be placed on foreign bottles. Mr Robert Henry Purdon, representing Frank M. Winstono, Ltd., opposed an application previously made at Auckland for a duty on wax board containers used mainly for distribution of honey and cream. Mr Francis Leigh Hutchinson, secretary, and Mr John William Green, factory manager for M. O’Brien and Co., boot manufacturers, supported requests previously made for increased protection for women and children’s shoes. Mr Thomas G. Shanks, for Suckling Bros., made a similar request. The general ground advanced was that labour costs in England were much below those in New Zealand.
