QUEEN CARNIVAL
ENJOYABLE PERFORMANCE AT OPERA HOUSE.
As a stimulus to tlie Queen Carnival at present being conducted in aid of the Central Relief Committee’s funds, tlie “popular pops” programme presented at the Opera House last evening served admirably, for the united labour of the five committees reaped a rich reward when a large audience attended. The funds were considerably augmented by the sale of sweets and cigarettes at a stall in the foyer, and there were also a number of ladies engaged on a similar mission. Each committee had prepared energeticallly and the general air of efficiency and confidence augured well for the success of the entertainment and of the campaign as a whole. The' programme was of a high standard, and the appreciation of the audience was seen in the demand for encores, which were freely given by the performers.
j During the interval, the Mayor (Mr [A. E. Alansford), who is chairman of j the central carnival committtee, intro- ! duced the five queens—Misses Molly I Nathan (Sports), Edna Boon (Retailers). Joan Barnett (Plunkot), Kathleen Richards (Public Service) and Joan Russell (Farmers). Introduced with appropriate remarks in each case, the candidates were greeted with warm applause. After thanking the audience for their attendance, Mr Mansford said their support augured well for the carnival. The Central Relief Committee were deeply grateful to the Rotary Club for the keen interest it had displayed in endeavouring to promote a scheme to relieve anxiety in the next winter. Tlie club had arranged the whole of tlie details up to the time the central executive was formed. Mr Mansford said he desired to accept the opportunity to pay a tribute to Mr P. S. Lareomb, the treasurer, and also treasurer of the Central Relief Committee, for his splendid work since the inception of the latter body. He had handled some thousands of pounds and the attention -to detail which the work entailed had earned for him the appreciation of all concerned. Applause greeted the reference to Mr Larcomb’s labours.
The Mayor added that tlie committees were confident that the carnival would be a.n unqualified success, and that Palmerston North would show that it was second to no town in the Dominion in raising funds. Three clothes drives had been held in a little over two years, and the last one had received a splendid response. The food and clothes depots had been open for some time and the wood depot had also rendered good service. It was estimated that it had taken £IOO a week t-o run the depots, so that a considerable sum had to be raised. The community gardens also gave a share of support. The committee had had to accept fairly large financial obligations and a good public response was sought to the appeal. The aim of the campaign was £2500. In conclusion, Mr Mansford expressed appreciation of tlie work of Air C. V. Day as secretary, Air S. AV Olliver as stage manager, and of tlie generosity of the performers, a vote of thanks being passed by acclamation.
Tlie following was the programme presented, the initials indicating the queens whom the performers supported. Mr P. Gedson’s orchestra (P.S.); recitation, “Crepe Soles,” Mr J.‘ W. Davidson (P.S.); song. “Muleteer of Malaga,” Mr AV. B. Tennent (P.S.); Spanish dance, Miss June Scott (P.); humour, Mr S. W.
