EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD.” OCTOBER 7, 1903.

The Palmerston North borough drainage system was being laid down. Mr T. Bastin, borough overseer, had visited Stratford, Hawera, AVanganui and Masterton to study points of the systems in us© at those towns. Plans were to he prepared immediately for the Palmerston North borough septic tank.

About 20 settlers from the Awahou and Mangaone ridings in the Pohangina County had spent some days with drays building an embankment along the Pohangina River to protect the silt where the bridge was to cross. The work was under the direction of Mr D. Sinclair, county engineer, and Messrs Arbuckle and Russell, members of the council, were among those working. Rt. Hon. Joseph Chamberlain had opened his campaign at Home against free trade and had been very enthusiastically received. Only 5000 people could gain admittance to the hall, a.nd 70,000 had applied for tickets. The repairs to the steamer Niwaru had been completed. The boat had bumped on the rocks at Napier some short time before. It was stated that the repairs had cost £25,000 at least.
