POST FOR ALFRED HILL.

STATE CONSERVATORIUM DIRECTOR. Received October 7, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 7. The Sydney Morning Herald states that Mr Alfred Hill, the well-known composer, will probably be the new director of the State Conservatorium of Music. Applications were received from all parts of the world, but it is understood that members of Cabinet favour Mr Hill, as he is an Australian. Alfred Hill, musician and composer, was born in Melbourne, being a son of Mr C. Hill, who lived many years in Wellington. He graduated at the Leipzig Conservatorium with honours in 1890. Fie was for four years the conductor of the Wellington Orchestral Society.” He has filled the following position:—Conductor of the Sydney Liedertafel 1898-1902; life conductor of the Professional Musicians’ Society of Sydney; musical director to Messrs J. C. Williamson Ltd. and conductor of the Auckland Liedertafel and Orchestral Society. He composed the cantata “Hinemoa” for the Wellington exhibition and the opera “Tapu” (with the libretto by Arthur Adams). He produced the opera “A Moorish Maid” in New Zealand and in Sydney. Some time ago his works created great interest in musical circles in the United State of America.
