CANADIAN TAXES.
CONCESSION POSSIBILITIES. OTTAWA, Oct. 5. The Minister of Commerce, Hon. H. H. Stevens, held a conference with tariff experts to-day to discuss the new Australian primage and excise duties. Canada cannot reduce her duties on Australian goods in return, as this can only be done by Act of Parliament, but she may make concessions by reducing the excise taxes to meet the Australian changes. ' A reduction on primage duties by Australia against Canadian and United Kingdom goods is hailed as glad tidings by Dr Ernest Scott, of Melbourne University. Addressing the Canadian Club to-day, he said he hoped Australia’s example would be- followed here. PRAISE FOR BUDGET. RISE IN SECURTIES. LONDON, Oct. 6. The city editor of the Times says the Australian Budget has resulted in an anticipated rise in Australian securities, including banks and commercial concerns. Gilt-edged securities generally have derived a stimulus from the Australian Budget and the New, Zealand loan. The Manchester Guardian regards the Budget as an encouraging and optimistic piece of work. An all-round increase in. commercial activities and lower taxation may indirectly result in higher future yield.
