RAILWAY STAFFS
DISMISSALS OF- AIEMBERS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. A definite denial to a statement telegraphed from Otago that dismissals in the Railway Department were on the increase and the breaches of the regulations formerly punished by fines and reductions were now met by instant dismissals, was . given by the General Manager of Railways (Mr G. H. Mackley), speaking at a Railway Officers Institute function on Saturday night. “I give that statement an emphatic denial on behalf of Air E. Casey myself and the Railways Board,” he declared. “I say definitely that, so far as dismissals are concerned, they have not increased since my assumption of office or since the Railway Board took office, unless or except by reason . of the fact that there has been an increase in serious irregularities committed by tho staff.” Mr Alackley said he had not ascertained the actual figures regarding the dismissals, but if there had been an increase it was due to that one aspect.
