TARIFF COMISSION

CLOTHING AND LEATHER EVIDENCE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 8. Duties on woollen clothing and leather were discussed in evidence before the Tariff Commission on Saturday. Mr J. Murphy, clothing manufacturer, Christchurch, asked that the present duty on ready-madr clothing of 27$ per cent. British and 50 per cent, general be amended to provide that the tariff on apparel containing wool be 32$ per cent, and 55 per cent, and the present rates remain on other appf.rel. Messrs S. L. Wright and R. O. Page, of Woolston Tanneries, asked for the retention of present duties on all leather goods. It was argued that the success of the tanning industry in New Zealand depended on the success of the boot 'industries.
