WINOOKA TO MEET DERBY WINNER NEW YORK, Oct. 7. It was announced to-day at Collinsville, Illinois, that Winooka will race Gay World, winner of the Chicago Derby, Malolo, and Tela, and three other stake horses for a special purse of 5000 dollars, at Fairmount Park on October 14. Winooka worked over fivo furlongs at Laurel, and was fighting for his head. A fair-sized crowd watched him at work, and were impressed. TEST AT LAUREL. BALTIMORE, Oct. 6. A special race, in which Winooka is likely to meet Mr George Widner's Jamestown, Mr A. L. Aste’s Character, Mr J. W. Y. Martin’s Conamore, and the Lcmar Stock Farm’s Marooned, was arranged to-day to be run on October 20 at the Laurel track as a public test for the Australian horse. The purse will be 2500 dollars and the race will probably be over six furlongs. Later advices state that the race is open to all and the opposition to Winooka is not yet determined. Racing circles believe, however, that only second and third-rate horses, such as Gold Step, Character, Conamore and Maroon will be available. It is thought that Jamestown and Station are unlikely to start. The latter is reported lame. However, all tho above-named horses are rated as superior to Hueu and Onrush. Gold Step won the Century Handicap at Jamaisa, New York, to-day. After the race the owner, Mr H. H. Fairbanks, announced that he was willing to wager substantially that his horse could defeat Winooka over six furlongs.
