OBITUARY.
MRS E. ARMSTRONG, AKITIO. The death occurred at Auckland on Friday of Mrs Elenora Armstrong, widow of the late James Armstrong, of Akitio, and mother of Mr Frank Armstrong (Akitio), Major James Armstrong (Mangataniwha, Wairoa), Mrs J. B. Henry (Auckland), and Mrs W. Wardell (Masterton). Mrs Armstrong, who was residing with Mrs Henry, had been ailing for about a month from the after-effects of influenza and was 89 years of age- She had been a widow for 53 years, her husband having been drowned in the Akitio River on September 1, 1880. Born in Argyllshire, Scotland, she arrived in Australia when 16 years of age and was married there about 1868 to Mr James Armstrong, a family of four being born at Fowler’s Bay, South Australia. In 1875 her husband bought Akitio station and the following year the family arrived to take up their residence there, the district then being practically in its virgin state. The deceased lady resided at Akitio for about 30 years until her family grew up and subsequently lived for a time at Wellington and later a.t Masterton The late Mrs Armstrong had a unique experience in the matter of travel—graduating from horse-back in the early days at Akitio to the buggy, then to the motor car and about three years ago she made the trip from Akitio by ’plane. She was widely known throughout the coast district and her passing will be mourned by the many who held her in the highest esteem. She had in all a family of seven children, three of whom died in infancy, the surviving members being those previously mentioned. In addition there are 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
