PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, Oct. 9. Cr. A. W. Bissott presided at the monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Oouncil to-day. There were also present: Cl's I C. Hodgins, T. Foully, F. Bolton, F. T. Horne, F ,V. Bryant, C. Lassen. 11. R. J Whitta and J. R. Nelson. Mr A. R. Carley (clerk to the Akitio County Council) wrote conveying his council’s sympathy in the death of Cr. S. Bolton. The engineer reported, inter alia : The teams have been employed throughout the month motulling on the highways and metal has also been carted for the purpose of feeding tho crusher. The trucks have been engaged carting maintenance metal on highways and also on various county roads. The gTaders have been employed at Marima, Konini and Kaitawa Roads and metal has boon graded in on all of tho main roads. Widening in tho Konini Gorge is still proceeding with labour under the No. 5 scheme. Attention had also been given to the main highways. Tho funeral of tho late Mrs A. M. Martin, of Pahiatua, took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege including numerous relatives from various parts of the North Island and also old friends resident in this and adjoining districts. The service at tho residence was conducted by Rev. W. B. Pickering, who paid a fitting tribute to tho deceased as a very old colonist and worthy pioneer. He also officiated at tho graveside. Tho pall-bcarers wore Messrs H. Martin and J. A. Martin (sons), R. McGovern and F. C. Sedcole (sons-in-law), and J. and A. Chapman (nephews). Many beautiful floral tributes, testifying to the esteem in which the late Mrs Martin was held, were received, including one from tho Methodist Church. A very pleasant surprise evening was spent in the woolshcd on tho Checkley Estate to celebrate the coming of age yesterday of Miss Elaine Checkley, tho party being tendered last evening by the young folk of Hinemoa. Visitors (relatives and friends) were present from Foxton, Palmerston North. Mangatainoka, Tane, Rongoinai and Kaitawa. The function was organised by a committee comprised of Mcsdames Algie, Clulow and Green and tho Misses Hind, Rider and Ross and Messrs Hind and Rider.
