SURVEY OF SIRES
DAIRY BOARD PROJECT. VALUE TO THE INDUSTRY. The complex problems facing those interested with sire survey work, which is to be inaugurated by the New Zealand Dairy Hoard, were briefly' dealt with by Mr A. H. Ward, technical officer of the board’s herd recording department, in an address at the annual meeting of the Dominion Group Herd Testing Federation at Hamilton. To clear up any misunderstandings, Mr Ward stressed the fact that the work over the next three years, which would be financed by the Dairy Board, was primarily investigational in nature. It was the opinion of the board that a Dominion-wide survey of sires was urgently necessary and the survey was intended, in the first place, as a service to testing members. Secondly, it was hoped to gain by it data on the milk and lnittorfat producing qualities of herds and light on problems affecting milk and lmtterfat production. The survey would also embrace the economic aspects of present breeding trends and it was hoped to be able to suggest, ns a result, a basis for future policy in breeding practice. The speaker illustrated his address with production graphs showing the proportionately great influence of sires upon offspring, as compared with the influence of dams.
