A start lias been made with the building of the new railway bridge to cross the AVaipawa River near Waipawa. The work is expected to take more than a year.
At 2 o’clock this morning the Palmerston North Fire Brigade received a call to a hedge fire which bad broken out in Rolleston Street. The damage was negligible.
Jf the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery will accept a painting of a typical New Zealand soldier for banging in the Gallery, the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association will take steps to have such a picture painted, 'ihe annual conference of delegates from branch associations considered a remit presented by the Wellington R.S.A., which suggested a full-sized painting, and agreed to the proposal. In a resolution carried by the annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association it was decided to recommend the Government to increase tlie Dominion’s annual contribution to the League of Nations. This was recommended to bring New Zealand’s contribution more into line with tlie country’s ability to contribute; to inspire other member States witli greater loyalty; and to offer a gesture of faith and good will towards nations still outside the League. Following the mysterious disappearance' of AVilliam Fergusson AVisbart from his home at Pakowhai, Hawke’s Bay, in November, 1934, and the recent finding of his decomposed body at Crownthorpo, an inquest was held in Hastings yesterday. The matter of identification was the main point to be established and after hearing evidence the Coroner (Mr G. Rbbett) said he was satisfied that the body found was that of Mr AVisbart, and a verdict was returned accordingly. By official authority of the Bureau of Industry, announced in the current issue of the Gazette, a Tauranga retail distributor of petrol is permitted to take his son into partnership. That such authority had to be obtained and justified before the bureau and later be solemnly gazetted illustrates the restrictive and tight control maintained on those industries that happen to be subject to the licensing provisions of the Industrial Efficiency Act, says the Auckland Herald. The current and previous issues of the Gazette contain long lists of applications dealt with by the bureau for licensing. Any business licensed must obtain the sanction of the bureau before any change in ownership can he effected, which accounts for the Tauranga application, and a number of other applications for a complete change of ownership. According to the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr J. R. Fow), the town lias found it difficult to keep pace with tlie progress of tlie population. He made that remark when addressing the New Zealand Dairy Federation conference. Earlier in the proceedings delegates had been uncomplimentary regarding the Jack of accommodation. Several of and their wives and families had to seek lodging in neighbouring towns, and it was evident they did not like it. Referring to this aspect of tlie conference, the Mayor said Hamilton, tlie chief centre of the AA’aikato, despite its own progressiveness, had found it impossible recently to _ keep step with the farmers, and this had been brought home to delegates by tlie difficulty of obtaining accommodation. lie asked, however, that this shortcoming he treated charitably, for the position was being remedied with the greatest possible speed. If and when tlie conference was again held in Ham ilton ample accommodation would he available.
