All- Alve was born at Featherston and at the age of four his parents removed to Eketahuna, where they took up a small area of land on the Alfredton Road. For 16 years the family remained there, and at the close of that period returned to Featherston, there milking a herd of 130 cows. In 1899 Mr Alve’s parents took up land at Rangitane, and the late gentleman and a brother-in-law, Air P. Pedersen, felled the first block of bush on the property. Much'of the bush was heavy timber and at that time a Sawmill was operated at Rangitane by Messrs Palmer and Pearce, who later sold it to Messrs Adsett, Baigent and McNabb. A good deal of the white pine and matai from the Alve holding went through the mill. At that time also there was a considerable Maori settlement at Rangitane. In 1902, Mr Alve’s parents took over the land at Rangitane and they had been- there only a very short time when a. big flood completely marooned them and Mr Alve had to use a Alaori canoe in securing provisions. In 1911 Mr Alve married, and shortly after that time the parents’ property was divided among the family and Alt- Alve commenced forming on his own account, to remain on that property until Ins sudden passing.
