WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND .. PRICES. There was fairly heavy Belling of shares on the Dominion Stock Exchanges last week and a. substantial turnover was recorded in Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch. The markets were geneially weak, but some recovery was shown on Friday and Saturday when a better tone developed in metal companies’ issues, duo to some recovery in the base metals market. There was little doing in Government loans, prices, of which were steady. Dealings in local body debentures were confined wholly to Auckland issues. Company stocks wero traded very sparingly. Bank shares showed no signs of recovery from their weak state. Now Zealand were steady at from 43s 6s to 449, and the D long-term mortgage shares were done at from 26s 4d to 26s 3d. Commercial Bank of Australia sold at 18s 4d to IBs 3d, and tile preference issue eased from £9 4s to £9 Is, with a sale on Friday at £9 2s. Australasia were dpne at £l2 7s. Union at £lO 17s 6d to £lO 15s. New South Wales at £36 to £35 15s, and National of Australasia, £lO paid, at £l4 7s 6d and the £5 paid at £7 3s to £7 2s 9d. Insurance shares wero quietly firm, National going at 17s to 17s 3d, New Zealand at 665, South British at 96s to 95s 6d, and Standard at 58s. Pastoral and financial issues were dull and lightly traded. Brewery shares wero active, particularly New Zealand, which firmed from 47s 6d to 48s. There wero heavy dealings in tho rights to tho new issue. Dominion and Staples showed little change. Tooths eased from 55s to 54s 3d. The chief feature in chain and department stores was weakness in G. J. Coles, which were heavily sold and fell away from £5 6s to £5 Is, with a later slight recovery. McKenzie Department Stores were a littlo easier, sales being made at from 81s to 795, recovering later to 79s 3d and 79s 9d. Wool worths wore very quiet, but a little firmer. There was heavy soiling of metal companies' shares, which showed marked weakness earlier in the week, but made a good recovory on Friday and Saturday. Broken Hill Proprietary sagged to 77s sd, but later moved up to 80s 7d. Electrolytic Zinc and Mount Lyell moved similarly. Other industrial and trading issues were very quiet, and, with few exceptions, showed an easy trend. Kaiapoi Woollen wero weak. Wellington Woollen, preference, sold at £6. SATURDAY’S BUSINESS.
