SKILLED LABOUR.
PROBAPLE DIFFICULTY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 26. The likelihood of a serious hold-up in the State housing scheme unless skilled labour is made available was stressed by Hon. P. C. Webb when replying to a deputation this morning. The Minister appealed to trades unions to co-operate with the Government in an endeavour to remedy the Dominion shortage, of skilled craftsmen. Referring to the apprenticeship problem, Mr Webb sa.id difficulties had arisen, but if necessary the Government would have to subsidise the employment of youths of 19 or 20 to train them. “We hope to evolve some practical proposals, but the scheme may have to deviate from orthodox methods of treating youth unemployment,” he said.
