FORTY-HOUR WEEK.

EXTENSION IN FRANCE. LONDON, June 27. The Paris correspondent of the Manchester Guardian says that the first important decision of the Government under M. Chautemps is a gesture of goodwill to its Left Wing supporters in the form of a decree applying the 40-hour week to hotels and restaurants. A further message from Paris states that as a protest against the introduction of the 40-hour week, restaurant and cafe proprietors threaten to close their establishments on Monday. Apart from depriving Frenchmen of their greatest amenity, this action will be a serious blow, as the tourist season is now at its height. Tlie employers sav that the change of hours will require 60,000 additional employees.
