MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Manawatu Hockey Association was held last evening, Mr W. G. Sutton presiding. Also present were Messrs W. H. Wilson, 1). Wilton, B. L. C. Aitchcson, W. J. Fitzgerald, W. Lundy, W. B. Kells, F. H. Tucker, H. Byers and B. A. Brace (lion, secretary.). The transfer of P. Comber from the Broadway Club to the Phoenix Club (senior) was approved. The Wellington Association wrote expressing appreciation of the hospitality extended to their representative team on their visit to Palmerston North during Show week and asking that thanks be conveyed to the A. and P. Association for making the fixture possible. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr A. B. Cliffe, donor of the Cliffe Shield, which is now contested annually between Manawatu and Wellington, and which originally was for competition between Wellington and Manawatu primary schools. Miss F. Highfield and Mrs Bolleston waited on the meeting suggesting that ladies’ hockey required a bigger “boost” than at present. There had, they said, been no club matches for two weeks and unless something more was done interest would lag. It was stated that probably a friendly representative match, perhaps with Bush, or with the Auckland team on their way to the tournament at Invercargill in August, could be arranged. The meeting agreed that there was not sufficient contact with the ladies, and Mr Wilson and the two ladies present were authorised to arrange a conference with a view to bringing the ladies in closer contact with the committee. It was also agreed to endeavour to arrange the matches with Bush and with Auckland. It was decided not to regard the de : fection of the Kauwliatu and Awahuri ladies’ teams as forfeits last Saturday, there being special circumstances involved. The games will ho played at the end of the season if the results have a bearing on the competition. Ordered off the field in the match Phoenix v. Massey College last Saturday. J. Morgan (Phoenix) was suspended for two playing Saturdays for excessive talking after a final warning had been given by the umpire. In connection with this matter the Phoenix Club wrote stating that every endeavour would he made in iuture to suppress talking during play, and they are to he thanked for their letter. The Umpires’- Association is to be written to suggesting strict umpiring with a view to checking excessive talk, which was stated to he becoming too obvious in many club games.
