VALUE OF TERRITORY.
OYER-ESTIMATION BY ITALY. Italv is rapidly discovering the difficulties of colonising Abyssinia, according to the Rome correspondent ot the Catholic Herald. Though the acquisition of the country has already cost £150,000,000, ex ports _ say it will not show anv nrofits for 25 years. One indication of the trouble is a desire to move the capital from Addis Ababa to some town on a lower level. There are 5000 Italians living in Addis Ababa, all of whom complain that the height is so trying for the heart that few Europeans can stand it for prolonged periods. The difficulty is that Europeans suffer almost as much from the heat in the lower towns as in the higher. It would appear that the value of Abyssinia as a colony for exploitation has been over-estimated in Ttaly. When Count Volpi was interviewed after the conquest, he said that, unlike Britain, Italy, as ah agricultural country, would he able to send hundreds of thousands of Italians to Abyssinia immediately.
