PLAN FOR PALESTINE.

“MUST REPORT BACK.”

PARLIAMENT’S DECISION.

LONDON, July 22. Critics describe the acceptance by the House of Commons of Mr Winston Churchill’s amendment without a division as a heavy defeat for the Government on a matter of major policy, pointing out that it means the Government will still be able to go before the League’s Mandates Commission with the proposals, but must report back to the British Parliament before taking further action. Moreover, it will not be able to claim at Geneva that the proposals have Parliament’s approval. The Daily Telegraph says the whole question of Palestine’s future is again in the melting-pot. The Daily Herald says: “The opinion generally expressed is that the partition proposals are dead or nearly so.”
