PRESIDENT DEFEATED.

SUPREME COURT MEASURE. SENATE RECOMMENDATION. WASHINGTON, July 23. President Roosevelt’s Supreme Court proposals were overwhelmingly defeated when the Senate, by 70 votes to 20, recommended the Bill to the Judiciary Committee, which was instructed to design a new measure reforming Lower Court procedure, hut eliminating the provisions for the alteration of the Supreme Court. The decision followed a meeting of the Judiciary Committee, at which the opposition demonstrated was sufficiently strong to force the abandonment of the measure. Congress is expected to adjourn shortly, possibly before the enactment of other important measures in President Roosevelt’s programme.
