OBITUARY

MR R. L. TIPPLER. The death occurred at Shannon, yesterday morning, of Mr R. L. Tippler, who was a widely known resident. Mr Tippler was 58 years of age and, although his health had not been good for some time, his passing came as a shock to his friends. Mr Tippler first went to Shannon in the early days of the district amj was engaged in contracting before undertaking farming, in which he paid particular attention to the use of the Jersey breed for the purposes of a milking herd. Ho associated himself keenly with the community life of his town and district, having at one time been a director of the Shannon Dairy Company and ehairnuin of the Shannon School Committee. At the time of his death ho was a member of the Horowhena Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club and a vice-president of the Horowhcnua Boys’ and Girls' Agricultural Club. Mr Tippler is survived by a widow, oiie daughter, and three sons.

MR AY. G. SMELLING. The death occurred this week of Mr William George Snelling. who had resided in the Palmerston North district for over 16 years. The deceased gentleman, who was 79 years of' age, was born at Shoreliam, Sussex, and at a very early age took up a seafaring career, which he followed for a long period. As* was common in those days, his life aboard ship was one full of adventure, and ho could tell of many thrilling experiences in the numerous trips made round Cape Horn, hollowing his marriage about 56 years ago he continued to respond to the call of the sea and for over a year his home was in the Falkland Islands. He Inter returned to the town of his birth, where his father was in the butchery business, and he proceeded to learn the trade. The business, it may be mentioned. wa3 established over 100 years ago by a grandfather of the late Mr Snelling. and it is to-day being carried on by one of his younger brothers. liis son, Mr G. L. Snelling, of Palmerston North, took up the trade in the same shop. Sixteen years ago, though over CO years of age. the spirit of adventure again captured Mr Snelling and he came to New Zealand, taking up a farming occupation at Ashhurst. Apart from failing eyesight lie had enjoyed wonderful health until a few months before Ids death. Ho was always of a retiring disposition, hut his genial nature won him many friends. The late Mr Snelling. was the oldest of a family of ten, and two sisters and two brothers survive him. He was twice married and leaves a family of six, four of the first marriage and two of the second. A son and two married daughters reside in England and another son in America, while Miss AY. Snelling and Mr G. h. Snelling reside in Palmerston North. One son predeceased his father. MR J. S. S. MEDLEY. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 24. Mr J. S. S. Medley, one of New Plymouth’s best known business men, died in the New Plymouth Hospital last night after a short illness, at the age of 69. He broke his right thigh last Wednesday as the result of slipping when entering his motor-car. Air Medley settled in New Plymouth 37 years ago and entered business. Some years later lie was appointed Deputy Official Assignee in Bankruptcy for North Taranaki and Registrar of Birth, Deaths and Marriages, lie was deputy-nssigneo until his death and it was only two years ago that lie relinquished the duties of registrar. He is survtvod by a widow and an adult family of three. AIR AV. J. RALPH. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 24. The death has occurred of Afr William Joseph Ralph, one of Auckland’s best known businessmen, at the age of 75. He was closely associated with the coalmining industry, ex-chairman of the New Zealand Native Association, and ex-president of the Citizens’ League. He is survived by two sons and five daughters.
