Stanley Baldwin resigned as Premier and Mr Neville Chamberlain formed a new Cabinet he selected with the help of other political leaders. At the same time Mr Ramsay MacDonald, one-time Premier, resigned as Lord President of the Council. Both resignations became official at the same time, though tendered several days apart. At the left above is Mr Neville Chamberlain after he had been received by King George VI at Buckingham Palace and asked to form a hew Cabinet. At the right is Mr Ramsay MacDonald as he returned to the Privy Council offices in London after he tendered his resignation to the King at Buckingham Palace. Upon his retirement from politics (he still continues to sit in the House of Commons) he was given the Order of Merit from the King
