DEATHS AMONG SHEEP.

POSSIBLE EXPLANATION. UNSKILFUL HANDLING. PUKEKOHE, July 23. The recent discoveries of sheep dead in paddocks at Pukekohe with their necks broken has led Mr Kfendnll James, a farmer of Te Rore, Waikato, to offer what may be a solution of the mystery. Mr James said that he had lost some sheep in a similar mamner. The cause was unskilful throwing of the animals by a new method when they were being handled for crutching, footroot treatment or other purposes. During the last few years lie had noticed that certain men, including Maoris, gripped the sheep by the nose and twisted its head back to force it over. While this saved lifting, it was not the correct application of the new method and often injured the sheep, causing the neck to break. Death might -not follow until days or even weeks after in cases where the injury was not so severe.

The fact that in the case of one owner at Pukekohe five sheep were found dead in a pen in tile corner of the paddock makes it almost certain that they were deliberately run in and killed. .
