NEWBURY.

(From Our Own Corerspondont.) NEWBURY, July 25. The July meeting of tho Newbury Women’s Institute was hold last week, there being a full attendance presided over by Mrs Shaw, who extended a welcome to members. The competition for a tray-cloth made from a 251 b (lour bag, worked in coloured cottons brought forth a largo entry and some beautiful work. It is rarely that an institute has a man to act as judge,- but Newbury holds that honour. Mr W. Hannah, who- kindly did tho judging, said each pioco of work was highly commendable. The awards were: Mrs W. Penborthy 1, Mrs Nod Wood 2, Mrs L. A. Shaw 3. Best bloom in flic garden, Mrs N. Wood 1, Mrs F. W. Vorry 2, Mrs L. Holland 3. Mrs N. Wood brought along a table-cloth made and sent by a friend at Pongakawa. This was made from two 200 flour bags and was a wonderful piece of work. Mesdames F. Vcrry and S. Death were appointed to attend tho group meeting early in September at Bunnythorpe. _ For the next, meeting tho competition is for the best four pikelets and flower out of member’s own garden. Tho demonstration will be given on hair-pin work and tailored buttonholes and members are requested to bring the articles required. Tho hostesses were Mesdames J. Linklator, M. Hanson and b. Death. , . , Tho Newbury Euchre Club journeyed to Kelvin Grove "this week to play for the Country Clubs’ Shield and won by three games. Mr Buchanan, on behalf of Kelvin Grove players, welcomed the Newbury team. At an interval between dances Mr Buchanan presented Mr Hansen (captain of the Newbury Club) with tho shield. On Saturday evening the Newbury Hall presented a very gay appearance, when the settlers of the district tendered a gift evening to Mr and Mrs Lionel Holland, who had tho misfortune to lose all their personal effects and, having 'no insurance, were big losers, when the house they resided in was burnt to the ground some weeks ago. A very jolly time was spent with items, dancing, and competitions, and a large number of useful gifts were prosentc. Mr Hansen, in asking Mr and Mrs Holland to accept the gifts, said they were given in a kind and neighbourly spirit and almost all tho settlers wore present at the gathering. Mr Holland said he and his wife had much pleasure indeed in thanking every one for their gifts. The following contributed items:—Miss Haythorne and Noeleno Perrin, elocutionary items; Mrs Bigliam, songs; Miss Perrin, tap dance; Mrs Green songs; Miss O’Connor and partner, exhibition dance; Mrs Bigham and Mrs Green were the accompanists Mr A. Hvde provided the music for tho dance. Mrs Shaw playing air extra. The duties of M.C. were in the hands of Mr S Death. The Newbury Women’s Institute were tho hostesses for the evening. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs J. Cheetham are at present spending a holiday at Eltham with their daughter, Mrs H. Belcher. Mr and Mrs Bain motored to Rongomai to the marriage of Mrs Bain’s brother, Mr Fichnoll The friends of Mrs Burbury will regret to learn that she is at present indisposed.
