WALLACE CUP.

MANAWATU B LOSE TO OROIJA. The hardy Oroua Sub-Union representatives easily accounted for Mana•\vatu B in the Wallace Cup representative match at Kimbolton. The score was 20 points to 6. The weather was dull and towards the end of the match rain fell and it was bitterly cold. The teams were :—- Oroua. —Pollard, Shannon, Am.adio, Thompson, Saywell, Pawson, Harland, Beilslti (2), Bowling, Wellwood, Cowan, McKay, Wingate, Gibb. Manawatu B. —Campbell, Bowyer, G. Wasley, Pierce, Blyth, Plank, Winiata, AVhite, O’Dea., L. Findlay, Thurston, Nicholson, Powell, Knyvett, Thorne. Manawatu kicked off and surprised their opponents by an early attack and successful penetration. The last to handle was Bowyer, who scored _ wide out. The kick failed. Harland interrupted an attack by knocking on, but Oroua pressed forward again and confined Manawatu to restricted territory, where several times the ball went dangerously near the visitors’ goal line. Campbell, however, cleared. The situation was also eased somewhat by a penalty awarded against Oroua. With play in midfield Amadio secured possession and sent a long low kick to Manawatu’s goal line, and Thompson rushed up to score. Amadio converted. Another attack was made by Oroua, and E. Beilski was responsible for a try within a few minutes. Amadio’s kick failed. Bustling the Manawatu men, Oroua again pressed forward, closing in on the ball all the -way until they were within striking distance, where Thompson dragged several of the Manawatu men along with him before passing on to Gibb to score another try which Amadio converted. Shortly afterwards Manawatu, who had shown little form up to this stage, were penalised and Amadio sent the ball between the uprights to add a.nother three points to Oroua’s substantial lead. From an opening made by Gibb Amadio scored a moment later in a handy position. The kick, however, failed. Just prior to the end of the first spell Manawatu were moving up fast, but Harland secured to upset the advance and despatched the ball to the side-line at midfield. . On the resumption Oroua were as aggressive as ever and, led by Amadio, with Pawson and Thompson in attendance, penetrated the delences. ilie lastmentioned cut through and registered another try. At last Manawatu found a weakness in their opponents’ defence and a good forward rush was successful when Bowyer came up to cut through near the side-line. Knyvett s kick fell short. Play was now in Manawatu’s favour and progress was further improved when the ball passed into Pollard’s hands, but his fumbling resulted in a scrum close-in. A penalty against Manawatu relieved a dangerous situation for Oroua. Manawatu continued to press and were nearly over on several occasions, but lacked the energy for a final successful effort and w-hen the match ended Oroua were holding them at bay. The final score was: _ „ Oroua 20, Manawatu B b. Mr H. Smith refereed.
